The Language of Somalia

Although the Somali people have a rich oral culture tradition to express ideas, emotions and culture, it was not until recently that the Somali language became the official language of the country.

In 1974 the Government established a committee to make an officila written version of the Somali language.


There are 21 consonants and 5 vowels in Somali.
